GATE Physics Exam Pattern
GATE Physics (Paper Code: PH) is a computer-based test (CBT) conducted by the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board. The exam structure is designed to test both conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability.
Exam mode
Computer-based test (CBT), conducted online at designated test centres.
Question types
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
Duration
3 hours, covering General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and the core Physics syllabus.
Marking Scheme
- Total marks and section-wise weightage are published in the official GATE brochure each year
- Negative marking applies only to MCQs, not to MSQ or NAT questions
- There is no negative marking for unattempted questions
- The paper includes General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and subject-specific Physics questions

GATE Physics Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates with a Bachelor's degree in Science (BSc) with Physics as a major subject
- Candidates currently in the final year of a qualifying degree program
- Candidates with a Master's degree in any branch of Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Applications
- No upper age limit for appearing in GATE Physics

Important Dates to Track
GATE follows a consistent annual cycle: applications typically open in the monsoon months, admit cards are released a few weeks before the exam, and results are declared roughly a month after the test.
