ABOUT GATE PHYSICS

GATE Physics — Exam Pattern, Marking Scheme & Career Pathways

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Physics — paper code PH — is conducted annually for admission to MTech/PhD programmes and for PSU recruitment. GATE 2025 was conducted by IIT Roorkee on February 16, 2025, and GATE 2026 by IIT Guwahati.

GATE Physics overlaps significantly with CSIR NET Physical Sciences — approximately 80% of the syllabus is shared, so students preparing for CSIR NET simultaneously build strong GATE Physics preparation. The critical difference: GATE includes General Aptitude (GA) as a mandatory 15-mark section, which CSIR NET does not have in the same format.

HOW TO USE

The Right Way to Use GATE Physics Solution PDFs

1. Start with 2025, work backward

Begin with the most recent paper — the current GATE standard. Then 2024 and 2023 for trend analysis. Go back to 2018 only after completing recent years.

2. Timed attempt before solutions

Download the question-only paper, set a 3-hour timer, and attempt all 65 questions — including every MSQ and NAT. Record your confidence per question.

3. MSQ and NAT — always attempt

No negative marking on MSQ and NAT. In practice and in the exam, never leave them blank — even an educated NAT guess is worth attempting.

4. Build an error notebook

Classify every wrong answer: concept gap / calculation error / GA strategy error / should-have-attempted (an MSQ or NAT left blank).

5. Study the GA solutions too

General Aptitude (15 marks) is often neglected. The GA solutions show the fastest approaches — study them as carefully as the physics.

6. Reattempt after topic study

For concept-gap questions, study the topic from Pravegaa’s free material or course, then reattempt those questions without looking at the answer.

🏅 The key insight from recent papers: GATE Physics no longer rewards pure formula recall — it rewards understanding why a physical relationship holds. That is exactly Pravegaa’s approach: concept clarity before problem solving.

MARKING SCHEME

GATE Physics — Question Types & Marking Scheme

GATE Physics has three question types with different marking rules. The solution PDFs include all three — understanding the scheme helps you use them strategically.

MCQ

Multiple Choice — 1 correct of 4

1M or 2M · −1/3 or −2/3

Be selective — attempt when you are confident. A wrong answer costs 1/3 or 2/3 of a mark.

MSQ

Multiple Select — 1 or more correct

1M or 2M · No negative ✓

Always attempt all MSQ. No partial credit — you need every correct option. Use solutions to learn systematic elimination.

NAT

Numerical Answer Type

1M or 2M · No negative ✓

Always attempt all NAT. Speed and calculation precision required — solutions show the fastest computational approaches.

GA

General Aptitude — Verbal + Numerical

15 marks · MCQ negative applies

Study GA solutions separately — the fastest GA approaches often differ from physics reasoning.

Pravegaa provides free GATE Physics solution PDFs for 8 years: 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018. All are free — no login, no registration required. Each PDF contains the complete question paper with step-by-step solutions for MCQ, MSQ, and NAT questions, including the General Aptitude (GA) section.

GATE Physics (paper code: PH) has 65 questions totalling 100 marks in a 3-hour CBT. Composition: General Aptitude (10Q, 15 marks) + Subject Paper (55Q, 85 marks). Three question types: MCQ (Multiple Choice — negative marking of −1/3 for 1M questions and −2/3 for 2M questions), MSQ (Multiple Select — NO negative marking, always attempt all), NAT (Numerical Answer Type — NO negative marking, always attempt all). MSQ and NAT together represent significant marks — never leave these blank.

GATE 2025 was conducted by IIT Roorkee (exam date: February 16, 2025) and GATE 2026 by IIT Guwahati. The conducting IIT rotates annually, but the syllabus and difficulty level remain consistent — the most recent paper solutions are the best benchmark for upcoming GATE preparation.

Start with 2025 (most recent — understand current difficulty and style), then 2024 and 2023 to see the 3-year trend. After completing 2023–2025, you will have a clear picture of the current exam. Then continue backward: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018. Always attempt the paper (question-only, from the PYQ page) under 3-hour timed conditions before opening the solution PDF. Never read the solution first.

GATE Physics and CSIR NET Physical Sciences share approximately 80% of their syllabus — the same 10 core physics topics are tested in both. The key differences: GATE includes General Aptitude (15 marks) which CSIR NET does not; GATE uses 1- and 2-mark questions while CSIR NET uses 2, 3.5 and 5-mark questions across Parts A, B and C; GATE’s NAT questions require precise numerical answers; CSIR NET Part C requires multi-step conceptual problem solving. Pravegaa’s CSIR NET programme builds the foundation that covers both exams simultaneously.

GATE Physics score enables: (1) recruitment by several PSUs and research organisations; (2) MTech/PhD admission at IITs, NITs, IISc, central universities; (3) a monthly scholarship for GATE-qualified MTech students. GATE score validity is 3 years. A strong GATE Physics rank combined with CSIR NET qualification is the most complete research-career credential available.
