TOPIC ANALYSIS

JEST Physics — 12-Year Topic Frequency

How often each topic has appeared across the 12 JEST papers from 2014 to 2025, and what to expect when it does.

12/12 papers

★★★

Quantum Mechanics

Highest — appears in every paper across Parts A, B and C. Perturbation theory, scattering and the harmonic oscillator are most frequent.

11/12 papers

★★★

Classical Mechanics

Lagrangian/Hamiltonian, central force, rigid body. Hamilton–Jacobi appears occasionally in advanced questions.

11/12 papers

★★★

Electromagnetic Theory

Maxwell equations, EM waves, boundary conditions, radiation, Lorentz transformations of fields.

10/12 papers

★★

Statistical Mechanics

Partition functions, MB/FD/BE distributions, phase transitions, heat capacity of solids.

9/12 papers

★★

Mathematical Physics

Residue theorem, eigenvalues, Fourier transforms, PDEs. Often embedded in other topic questions.

7/12 papers

★★

Condensed Matter

Bragg’s law, Fermi energy, band theory, superconductivity basics. Heavier in recent years.

6/12 papers

★

Nuclear & Particle Physics

Q-value, decay, conservation laws, quark model basics. Usually 2–3 questions per paper.

6/12 papers

★

Modern Physics

Special relativity, photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, de Broglie. Often in Part C.

5/12 papers

★

Optics & Waves

Interference, diffraction, SHM, wave propagation. More common in earlier papers.

4/12 papers

★

Atomic & Molecular Physics

Spectral terms, selection rules, Zeeman effect. Less frequent than in CSIR NET.

2/12 papers

—

Electronics

Very light coverage — occasionally 1–2 questions. Do not over-invest preparation time.

STUDY STRATEGY

How to Use JEST PYQ Papers Effectively

PYQ papers only build exam skill when used correctly. Solving them without strategy gives false confidence. These 6 steps extract the maximum value from every paper.

1. Attempt Before Checking

Solve the full paper under timed conditions (3 hours, 50 questions) before checking any answers. Timed pressure is inseparable from JEST performance.

2. Part B First — Always

Part B has no negative marking (+3, no penalty). Attempt all 10 Part B questions first in every mock — this habit alone is worth 30 marks.

3. Classify Every Error

Concept gap → re-study. Calculation error → practise for speed. Misread → work on exam technique.

4. Track Year-wise Topics

After each paper, note which topics appeared and how many questions. Over the years this reveals exactly what JEST repeatedly tests.

5. Reattempt After 2 Weeks

Re-attempt the same paper 2 weeks later without notes. If your score hasn’t improved, your concept work isn’t yet reaching application level.

6. Compare with Solutions

Compare your method, not just your answer, with Pravegaa’s JEST solutions — a faster or more elegant method usually exists.

JEST SOLUTIONS

JEST Physics Previous Year Solutions

Downloading the question paper is only half the work. Understanding why each answer is correct — and what approach reaches it fastest — is where real exam preparation happens.

Pravegaa provides detailed JEST Physics solutions with complete derivations, alternative approaches, and exam strategy notes for each question — free on the solutions page.
