Detailed Syllabus — Exam by Exam

CSIR NET / JRF

CSIR UGC NET Physical Sciences

The premier national fellowship for Physics researchers. Qualifying as JRF opens doors to PhD positions with CSIR/UGC stipend across all national institutes.

Frequency: Twice a year (June & December)
Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)
Duration: 3 hours
Marks: 200 marks total
Eligibility: MSc Physics or equivalent (final year students can apply)
Conducted by: NTA (National Testing Agency)

Syllabus Topics:

Mathematical PhysicsClassical MechanicsElectromagnetic TheoryQuantum MechanicsStatistical MechanicsAtomic & Molecular PhysicsCondensed Matter PhysicsNuclear & Particle PhysicsElectronics
💡 Pravegaa Tip: Highest weightage: Quantum Mechanics (Part C). Strongest differentiator for JRF: Statistical Mechanics and Condensed Matter.
🎓

IIT JAM Physics

IIT Joint Admission Test for MSc — Physics

Gateway to MSc Physics at IITs, NITs, and central universities. IIT JAM Physics score is also accepted by several institutes for direct PhD admission.

Frequency: Once a year (February)
Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)
Duration: 3 hours
Marks: 100 marks
Eligibility: BSc Physics (final year students can apply)
Conducted by: IITs on rotation

Syllabus Topics:

Mathematical PhysicsMechanics & General Properties of MatterOscillations, Waves & OpticsElectricity & MagnetismKinetic Theory & ThermodynamicsModern PhysicsSolid State Physics, Devices & Electronics
💡 Pravegaa Tip: High-weight sections: Mechanics, Oscillations & Waves, and Modern Physics. NAT (Numerical) questions have no negative marking — always attempt them.

GATE Physics

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering — Physics (PH)

GATE Physics score is used for admission to MTech and PhD programs at IITs and NITs, and for recruitment in PSUs and research organisations like BARC and DRDO.

Frequency: Once a year (February)
Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)
Duration: 3 hours
Marks: 100 marks
Eligibility: BSc Physics or BE/BTech in relevant fields
Conducted by: IISc / IITs on rotation

Syllabus Topics:

Mathematical PhysicsClassical MechanicsElectromagnetic TheoryQuantum MechanicsThermodynamics & Statistical MechanicsAtomic & Molecular PhysicsSolid State PhysicsNuclear & Particle PhysicsElectronics
💡 Pravegaa Tip: Strong overlap with CSIR NET syllabus. GATE tests more applied physics — Electronics and Experimental Methods carry higher weightage than in CSIR NET.
🔬

JEST Physics

Joint Entrance Screening Test — Physics

JEST is accepted by leading research institutes: TIFR, IUCAA, NCRA, IMSc, and IISERs for integrated PhD and PhD programmes in Physics and Theoretical Computer Science.

Frequency: Once a year (February/March)
Mode: Pen and Paper (OMR based)
Duration: 3 hours
Marks: 100 marks
Eligibility: BSc/MSc Physics (final year students can apply)
Conducted by: SERB / participating institutes jointly

Syllabus Topics:

Mathematical MethodsClassical MechanicsElectromagnetic TheoryQuantum MechanicsStatistical MechanicsCondensed Matter PhysicsAtomic & Molecular PhysicsNuclear & Particle Physics
💡 Pravegaa Tip: JEST is harder than CSIR NET Part C in some years. Strong Quantum Mechanics and Classical Mechanics preparation is essential. No negative marks in Part B.

TIFR GS Physics

TIFR Graduate School Admissions — Physics

TIFR GS is one of the most prestigious entrances for PhD in Physics in India. Admission to TIFR Mumbai, TCIS Hyderabad, and other national centres.

Frequency: Once a year (December)
Mode: Pen and Paper (OMR based)
Duration: 3 hours
Marks: Graded percentile-based
Eligibility: BSc/MSc Physics
Conducted by: TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research)

Syllabus Topics:

Mathematical MethodsClassical MechanicsElectromagnetic TheoryQuantum MechanicsStatistical MechanicsCondensed Matter PhysicsNuclear & Particle PhysicsExperimental Methods
💡 Pravegaa Tip: TIFR tests conceptual depth above speed. Thermodynamics and Quantum Mechanics are consistently heavy. The exam is highly competitive — top 1% nationally.
🏫

CUET PG Physics

Common University Entrance Test PG — Physics

CUET PG Physics is required for admission to MSc Physics at central universities including JNU, BHU, HCU, and Delhi University.

Frequency: Once a year (May-June)
Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)
Duration: 105 minutes
Marks: 300 marks
Eligibility: BSc Physics graduates
Conducted by: NTA (National Testing Agency)

Syllabus Topics:

Mathematical PhysicsMechanicsElectromagnetismOpticsQuantum MechanicsThermodynamicsModern PhysicsSolid State Physics
💡 Pravegaa Tip: CUET PG has strong overlap with IIT JAM Physics. Strong preparation for IIT JAM will also cover most of the CUET PG Physics syllabus.

Physics Competitive Exam Syllabi — Complete Guide

India has six major physics competitive examinations that students target after BSc or MSc Physics: CSIR NET/JRF, IIT JAM, GATE Physics, JEST, TIFR GS, and CUET PG. Each examination has a distinct purpose, pattern, and level of difficulty — but all share a substantial common syllabus in core physics topics.

At Pravegaa Education, we help students understand not just what is in the syllabus, but how much depth is required for each topic in each examination. A topic like Quantum Mechanics is tested at undergraduate level in IIT JAM, at MSc level in CSIR NET Part B, and at research level in CSIR NET Part C and TIFR GS. Understanding this gradient is the first step to efficient preparation.

Common Preparation Strategy for Multiple Exams

The smartest approach is to prepare for the hardest target exam first and let the easier exams follow. The recommended order:

  • CSIR NET + GATE together: 85% syllabus overlap. Preparing for CSIR NET Part C automatically covers GATE Physics.
  • IIT JAM then CSIR NET: IIT JAM builds the BSc-level foundation; CSIR NET adds depth and breadth needed for research.
  • JEST + TIFR together: Both test the same depth. Practice TIFR-level Quantum Mechanics and Classical Mechanics for both.
