General Questions
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Physics, also called GATE PH, is a national-level exam that tests conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability in physics. It is used for admission to MSc/PhD programs at IITs and IISc, and for PSU recruitment.
Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Science with Physics as a major, final-year students of a qualifying program, and candidates with a relevant Master’s degree are generally eligible. There is no upper age limit. Always confirm against the official GATE brochure for the current year.
GATE Physics is primarily aimed at postgraduate and PSU admissions, IIT JAM is for MSc admissions after a bachelor’s degree, and CSIR NET is for JRF/lectureship eligibility. The core syllabus overlaps significantly across all three, which is why many Pravegaa students prepare for more than one exam using the same foundation.
Syllabus & Exam Pattern
The syllabus spans Mathematical Physics, Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetic Theory, Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Solid State Physics, Nuclear and Particle Physics, and Electronics. GATE Physics includes MCQs, Multiple Select Questions, and Numerical Answer Type questions. Negative marking applies only to MCQs. Exact marks distribution is published in the official GATE brochure each year.
This varies by student background, but most of our students preparing seriously alongside coursework or other exams dedicate 8 to 12 months of structured preparation. Our faculty can suggest a realistic timeline once they understand your current level.
