About IIT JAM
What is IIT JAM? — Joint Admission Test for M.Sc
The Joint Admission Test for M.Sc (JAM) is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was introduced in the Academic Session 2004–05.
JAM serves as the primary gateway to M.Sc. (Two Years), Joint M.Sc.–Ph.D., M.Sc.–Ph.D. Dual Degree, and other Post-Bachelor Degree Programmes at 22 IITs and Integrated Ph.D. Programmes at IISc Bangalore.
The examination is conducted as an Online Computer Based Test (CBT) and is the single most important exam for BSc Physics graduates seeking admission to the world-class MSc programmes at IITs — opening pathways to research careers at IITs, IISc, TIFR, IISER, and globally.
🎓 M.Sc + Research Path
Qualify JAM → MSc at IIT → convert to M.Sc.–Ph.D. Dual Degree → JRF/PhD fellowship → Research career at IIT, IISc, TIFR, or abroad.
▼ IIT JAM is a Benchmark
JAM is designed to serve as a benchmark for undergraduate science education. Cracking IIT JAM Physics signals genuine mastery of BSc-level physics concepts and problem-solving.
🎯 CCMN NIT Seats Also
JAM scores are also accepted through CCMN (Centralized Counselling for M.Sc./M.Sc.–Ph.D.) for MSc Physics seats at NITs — significantly expanding the number of seats available.
Eligibility Criteria
IIT JAM Physics Eligibility Criteria 2025
Candidates who qualify in JAM must fulfil the following eligibility criteria for admission to IISc Bangalore and IITs. The qualifying degree for Physics is a BSc with Physics as a major/principal subject, or equivalent.
For IITs
General / OBC-NCL / EWS
Minimum 55% aggregate marks in the qualifying degree (all subjects, all years combined, including languages and subsidiaries).
SC / ST / PwD
Minimum 50% aggregate marks in the qualifying degree (all subjects, all years combined, including languages and subsidiaries).
For IISc Bangalore
General / OBC-NCL / EWS
First Class marks as declared by the qualifying university.
SC / ST / PwD
At least Second Class or 50% aggregate marks in the qualifying degree.
Other Key Conditions
- ✓ No age limit for appearing in IIT JAM
- ✓ Final year students may appear conditionally — admission confirmed on degree completion
- ✓ Physics must be a principal / major subject in the qualifying degree
- ✓ Indian Nationals and Foreign Nationals both eligible
- ✓ Qualifying degree must be from a recognised Indian or foreign university
⚠ Important Note on Aggregate Marks: The 55%/50% aggregate is calculated across all subjects in all years of the qualifying degree — including language papers, electives, and subsidiary subjects. Not just physics papers. Plan your undergraduate performance accordingly.

Section A
MCQMultiple Choice Questions — One Correct Answer
⚠ Negative Marking: −1/3 for 1-mark wrongs • −2/3 for 2-mark wrongs
Section B
MSQMultiple Select Questions — One or More Correct Answers
✓ NO Negative Marking. Full marks only for all correct options selected.
Section C
NATNumerical Answer Type — Enter the Value
✓ NO Negative Marking. Answer entered using virtual numeric keypad.
📋 Quick Summary — IIT JAM Physics Paper
Marking Scheme
IIT JAM Physics Marking Scheme & Negative Marking Rules
| Section | Type | Marks for Correct | Negative Marking | Unattempted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section A (MCQ) | Single correct answer | 1 mark or 2 marks | −1/3 (for 1-mark) −2/3 (for 2-mark) | 0 (no penalty) |
| Section B (MSQ) | One or more correct | 2 marks (all correct only) | None | 0 (no penalty) |
| Section C (NAT) | Numerical value | 1 mark or 2 marks | None | 0 (no penalty) |
⚡ Strategy for Section A (MCQ)
Attempt only when confident. Wrong answer costs 1/3 or 2/3 marks. Skip if <70% sure. For 2-mark questions, the risk-reward ratio is clearer — skip if uncertain.
🎯 Strategy for Section B (MSQ)
No negative marking but no partial credit. Only select options you are sure about. Don’t guess. Selecting a wrong option along with correct ones gives zero for that question.
🔢 Strategy for Section C (NAT)
No negative marking — attempt all NAT questions. Even an educated calculated guess is worth attempting. Focus on significant figures and unit conversions to avoid common errors.
💻 Exam Hall Rules
Virtual calculator available online. No physical calculator allowed. No charts, graph sheets, mobile phones. Scribble pad provided for rough work — must be returned.
