💡 What these numbers mean: 748 total physics seats across IITs means roughly 748 students can secure an IIT MSc/PhD seat through JAM PH paper. With 2,000+ additional CCMN seats at NITs and other institutes, the realistic opportunity is much larger. A JAM Physics score of 75+ marks is generally considered competitive for IIT admissions (GEN category). Scores of 50–75 still fetch seats at newer IITs and NITs.

Beyond IITs

CCMN — 2,000+ Additional Seats via JAM Score

A qualifying JAM Physics score opens admission at IITs and over 2,000 additional seats at NITs, IISc Bangalore (Integrated PhD), IIESTs, DIATs, and other CFTIs through the Centralised Counselling for M.Sc. (CCMN). Students who do not get an IIT can still secure an excellent MSc seat through CCMN.

🎓

IISc Bangalore — Integrated PhD

JAM Physics score accepted for Integrated PhD in Physical Sciences at IISc. Most competitive — first class marks required for GEN category.

🏫

NITs — MSc Physics

30+ NITs offer MSc Physics via CCMN. NIT Warangal, NIT Calicut, NIT Trichy, NIT Rourkela are among the most sought-after for physics.

IIEST Shibpur

Institute of Engineering & Science, Shibpur — MSc Physics via CCMN. Established institute with strong physics department.

📋

DIAT, Pune

Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune — MSc Physics via CCMN. Unique research environment.

🔬

IISER Pune & Bhopal

Select IISERs accept JAM Physics scores for their integrated PhD and MSc programmes alongside their own IISER Aptitude Test.

🎪

SLIET & Others

Several other CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutes) accept JAM scores via CCMN for MSc Physics admissions.

Category-wise Seats

How Seats Are Distributed by Category

IIT JAM seats follow Government of India reservation norms. Each institute distributes its total seats across categories. The breakdown below is representative — verify exact numbers per institute at JOAPS.

Category% ReservationQualifying Cutoff (approx.)Key Note
General (GEN)~40.5% of seats75+ marks recommendedMost competitive category — highest cutoffs at top IITs
EWS (Economically Weaker Section)~10% of seats60–70 marksIntroduced from 2019 — GEN candidates with EWS certificate
OBC-NCL~27% of seats55–65 marksNon-Creamy Layer — certificate required; separate merit list
SC (Scheduled Caste)~15% of seats40–55 marksQualifying cutoff lower than GEN; separate merit list
ST (Scheduled Tribe)~7.5% of seats35–50 marksLowest qualifying cutoff; separate merit list
PwD (Persons with Disability)~5% of seats (horizontal)As per categoryHorizontal reservation applied within each category

ℹ Exact category-wise seat counts per institute and programme are available on the JOAPS portal (jam2026.iitb.ac.in). Qualifying cutoffs for JAM 2026 were released on March 21, 2026. Students meeting the cutoff participate in JOAPS counselling for seat allotment in multiple rounds.

How to Choose

Which IIT Should You Target? — Score vs Institute

With 748 Physics seats across 22 IITs, the right strategy is to apply widely and let your rank determine where you land. Here is a general score-to-institute guide for GEN category.

IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras

85–100

The most competitive — typically top 50–100 ranks in Physics. Very high MSc programme quality and research environment. IIT Delhi (68 seats) is highest.

IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati

75–90

Strong theoretical and experimental physics. IIT Guwahati (60 seats) and Kharagpur (59 Joint MSc-PhD) are significant.

IIT Roorkee, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad

65–80

Excellent research opportunities. Roorkee has a strong physics tradition. Gandhinagar (45 seats) is increasingly sought-after.

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IIT Indore, IIT Patna

55–70

Established mid-tier IITs with solid physics programmes. Dhanbad (55 seats each for Physics and Applied Geophysics) is particularly accessible.

Newer IITs — Bhilai, Jammu, Mandi, Palakkad, Tirupati

45–60

Smaller seats (20–30) but growing research output. Mandi offers Integrated PhD (direct to PhD from BSc).

NITs via CCMN

40–55

NIT Warangal, NIT Calicut, NIT Trichy — excellent PG physics programmes accessible with lower JAM scores. Highly underrated option.

🎯 Key strategy: Apply to every IIT where you are eligible — there is no harm in multiple preferences. Fill at least 10–15 institute preferences in JOAPS during counselling. Accept & Upgrade option allows you to take a seat and continue hoping for a better allotment in subsequent rounds.

Admission Process

IIT JAM 2026 — Admission & Counselling Process

Step-by-Step Admission Process

1

Appear for JAM & Qualify

Score at or above the qualifying cutoff for your category. Cutoff released alongside results on March 21, 2026.

2

Register on JOAPS Portal

Visit jam2026.iitb.ac.in and register on the JOAPS portal. Fill the application form for admission — submit before the deadline.

3

Fill Institute & Programme Preferences

Enter up to 15+ preferences in order. Include all IITs you are eligible for — wider preferences = higher chance of allotment.

4

Seat Allotment — Round 1

JOAPS releases the first allotment list. Three options: Accept & Freeze (confirmed), Accept & Upgrade (hold while waiting better), or Reject.

5

Accept & Upgrade — Subsequent Rounds

If you accept in Round 1 but a better preference opens in Round 2/3, you can upgrade. Counselling has 4 rounds + 1 additional.

6

Report to Institute

Once you Accept & Freeze, report to the allotted IIT with documents and pay the seat acceptance fee. Session begins July–August 2026.
