What is IIT JAM?
Joint Admission Test for M.Sc (IIT JAM) — Complete Overview
The Joint Admission Test for M.Sc (IIT JAM) is a national-level entrance exam conducted jointly by IITs and IISc for admission to MSc Physics, MSc Chemistry, MSc Mathematics, MSc Statistics, MSc Economics, MSc Geology, and MSc Biotechnology programmes. For Physics specifically, IIT JAM 2026 was conducted by IIT Bombay on February 15, 2026, with 748 MSc Physics seats across 22 IITs. The conducting institute rotates annually among the IITs.
IIT JAM Physics is the primary pathway for BSc Physics graduates to secure seats at India’s premier IITs for MSc Physics — with an IIT degree that directly leads to PhD at IITs, IISc, IISER, and international universities. Additionally, IIT JAM scores qualify for NIT MSc seats through CCMN. JEST and TIFR preparation benefits significantly from IIT JAM preparation — approximately 75–80% syllabus overlap.

Exam Pattern
IIT JAM Physics — Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme 2026
IIT JAM Physics is a 3-hour Computer Based Test (CBT) with 60 questions totalling 100 marks across three sections. Understanding the marking scheme — especially where negative marking applies — is critical for exam strategy.
| Section | Type | Questions | Marks/Q | Total | Negative | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section A | MCQ — 1 correct out of 4 | 30Q | 1M or 2M | 50/100 | −1/3 per wrong | Attempt carefully. 10 questions of 1M and 20 questions of 2M. Skip when unsure — penalty applies. |
| Section B | MSQ — 1 or more correct | 10Q | 2M each | 20/100 | No negative ✓ | Always attempt all 10 — no penalty. Partial marks NOT given — only fully correct answers score. Mark all you’re confident about. |
| Section C | NAT — Numerical answer | 20Q | 1M or 2M | 30/100 | No negative ✓ | Always attempt all 20 — no penalty. 1M questions (10) and 2M questions (10). Speed + calculation accuracy critical. |
| Total: 60 questions • 100 marks • 3 hours • CBT mode • February annually | ||||||
Section A Strategy
30 questions, 50 marks but negative marking. Target 85%+ accuracy. Skip if less than 70% confident. A wrong 2M answer costs 2.67 marks (2M lost + 0.67M penalty).
Section B Strategy
10 MSQ questions — no negative marking. Always attempt all 10. Read all options carefully before marking. Full marks only for fully correct response.
Section C NAT Strategy
20 Numerical Answer Type — no negative marking. Always attempt all 20. Speed and calculation accuracy both required. Pravegaa’s test series specifically trains this.
