Exam Pattern
IIT JAM Physics — Paper Pattern the Test Series Simulates
Every test in Pravegaa’s IIT JAM test series simulates the exact CBT pattern. Understanding the structure makes the test series strategically invaluable — especially Section B and C where there is zero negative marking.
| Section | Type | Questions | Marks | Negative Marking | Test Series Trains |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section A | MCQ — 4 options, 1 correct | 30 (10×1M + 20×2M) | 1M & 2M | −1/3 & −2/3 | Accuracy under pressure — selective attempt |
| Section B | MSQ — may have multiple correct answers | 10 (all 2M) | 2M each | None ✅ | Always attempt ALL — train this reflex in every mock |
| Section C | NAT — enter numerical answer via keypad | 20 (10×1M + 10×2M) | 1M & 2M | None ✅ | Speed + precision on numericals — always attempt ALL |
| 💡 The most important insight: Sections B + C = 50 marks with zero negative marking. Always attempt every B and C question regardless of confidence. The test series builds this habit through repetition across every mock. | |||||
Section A Strategy
30 MCQs with negative marking. Attempt selectively — only when confident. Each 2M wrong costs −2/3. Train accuracy over speed. In full mocks, track your hit rate per attempt.
Section B Strategy
10 MSQs — zero negative marking. Always attempt ALL 10. Full marks only if all correct options selected and no wrong option. Partial selection scores 0. The test series trains this critical discipline.
Section C Strategy
20 NAT numericals — zero negative marking. Always attempt ALL 20. Online calculator is provided. Train the habit of never leaving a NAT blank. Even a rough estimate is better than zero.
Test Types
5 Types of Tests — What Each One Does
Every plan includes all 5 test types. The order of use matters — class tests first, then part tests, then full mocks, then PYQ. Each type serves a distinct purpose in your preparation.
Class Tests
Topic-wise tests for individual sub-topics — Mathematical Physics, Classical Mechanics, EMT, Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Optics, etc. Use immediately after finishing each topic. Finds concept gaps while the topic is still fresh.
Premium Tests
Higher-difficulty questions beyond standard textbook level — NAT-style numericals and MCQs at IIT JAM Part C depth. Essential for targeting a strong rank. Tests what the exam actually rewards: speed and precision on hard problems.
Part Tests (A, B, C)
Tests designed for each section separately — Section A (MCQ), Section B (MSQ), and Section C (NAT). Master each section’s unique strategy before combining in full-length mocks. Particularly important for training the B and C zero-negative habit.
Full Length Tests
Complete 3-hour, 60-question, 100-mark CBT simulations — exact IIT JAM pattern. Develops stamina, attempt order, and time management. The single most important test type for actual exam performance. Target 75+ marks in full mocks.
Previous Year Tests
Official PYQ papers formatted as timed online tests with automatic scoring. Most direct preparation — 30–40% of IIT JAM question patterns repeat across years. PYQ performance is the single best predictor of actual exam performance.
How to Use
How to Use the IIT JAM Test Series Effectively
A test series only builds exam skill when used correctly. These 6 rules extract the maximum value from every test in the series.
Class Tests After Each Topic
Take the class test immediately after studying a topic — while it’s fresh. Don’t wait to finish the full syllabus.
Always Attempt All B & C
In every mock: never leave a Section B (MSQ) or Section C (NAT) blank. No penalty. Build this reflex through every practice test.
Full Mocks — Timed, No Interruptions
Attempt full-length mocks exactly like the real exam — 3 hours, no pauses, no phone. Exam pressure is a separate skill from exam knowledge.
Classify Every Error
Wrong answers fall into: concept gap, calculation error, or strategy error. Each needs a different fix. Don’t just check the answer — know exactly why you were wrong.
PYQ Tests as Benchmarks
After 4–6 weeks of topic practice, attempt a PYQ test. Your PYQ score is the most honest measure of exam readiness. If static, your concept work isn’t converting.
Target 75+ in Full Mocks
A JAM Physics score of 75+ is generally safe for IIT MSc admissions. Use full mocks to calibrate — if scoring below 60, identify the lowest-scoring sections and prioritise.
