About These Solutions

What the GATE Physics Solution PDFs Contain

Each GATE Physics solution PDF from Pravegaa Education contains the complete question paper alongside step-by-step worked solutions covering all three question types: MCQ (negative marking, −1/3), MSQ (no negative marking), and NAT — Numerical Answer Type (no negative marking). Solutions are authored by Pravegaa faculty — the same quality as the paid course notes.

The 2025 paper (conducted by IIT Roorkee, February 16, 2025) is the most critical to analyse first. GATE Physics 2025 continued the trend toward conceptual depth over formula application — particularly in Mathematical Physics, Quantum Mechanics, and Classical Mechanics. Understanding why the solution approach was chosen in 2025 is essential for GATE 2026 preparation (IIT Guwahati).

About GATE Physics

GATE Physics — Exam Pattern, Marking Scheme & Career Pathways

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Physics — paper code PH — is conducted annually for admission to MTech/PhD programmes and for PSU recruitment. GATE Physics is also the path to BARC, DRDO, ISRO, ONGC scientific officer roles. GATE 2025 was conducted by IIT Roorkee on February 16, 2025. GATE 2026 will be conducted by IIT Guwahati.

GATE Physics overlaps significantly with CSIR NET Physical Sciences — approximately 80% of the syllabus is shared. Students preparing for CSIR NET simultaneously build strong GATE Physics preparation. The critical difference: GATE Physics includes General Aptitude (GA) as a mandatory 15-mark section, which CSIR NET does not have in the same format.

Mathematical Physics

~15%

Linear algebra, complex analysis, differential equations, vector calculus, special functions, Fourier transforms, statistics. Foundation for every other topic — solutions here reveal how tools are applied.

Classical Mechanics

~13%

Lagrangian/Hamiltonian, rigid body, central force, small oscillations, special relativity. High conceptual depth in recent papers — 2024–2025 solutions show increasing Lagrangian emphasis.

Electromagnetic Theory

~13%

Maxwell’s equations, EM waves, boundary conditions, waveguides, radiation. Solutions reveal how boundary value problems are set up and solved systematically.

Quantum Mechanics

~13%

Schrödinger equation, perturbation theory, angular momentum, spin, identical particles, scattering. Very consistent topic — appears heavily in MSQ and NAT sections.

Thermodynamics & Stat Mech

~10%

Laws of thermodynamics, partition functions, FD/BE/MB distributions, phase transitions. Strong overlap with CSIR NET — Pravegaa’s CSIR NET notes are directly applicable.

Atomic & Molecular Physics

~8%

How to Use

The Right Way to Use GATE Physics Solution PDFs

1

Start with 2025, then work backward

Begin with the most recent paper (2025). This represents the current GATE standard. Then 2024, 2023 for trend analysis. Work backward to 2018 only after completing recent years.

2

Timed attempt before solutions

Download the question-only paper. Set a 3-hour timer. Attempt all 65 questions — including every MSQ and NAT (no negative in those types). Record your confidence level per question.

3

MSQ and NAT — always attempt

GATE MSQ and NAT carry no negative marking. In practice AND in the actual exam: never leave any MSQ or NAT blank. Even an educated guess on NAT is worth attempting. Build this habit now.

4

Build an Error Notebook

After checking the solution, classify every wrong answer: Concept gap (needs topic study) / Calculation error (needs practice) / GA strategy error / Should-have-attempted (MSQ or NAT you left blank).

5

Pay attention to GA solutions

General Aptitude (15 marks) is often neglected. The solution PDF’s GA section shows the fastest approaches to verbal and numerical GA questions — study these as carefully as physics solutions.

6

Reattempt after topic study

For questions you classified as ‘concept gap’ — study that topic from Pravegaa’s free material or course, then reattempt those specific questions from the solution PDF without looking at the answer.

🏅 The key GATE insight from 2025 paper analysis: GATE Physics no longer rewards pure formula recall. The 2025 paper — and the trend since 2022 — rewards students who understand why a physical relationship holds, not just what it is. This is exactly the teaching approach at Pravegaa: concept clarity before problem solving. Pravegaa CSIR NET + GATE programme →

Marking Scheme

GATE Physics — Question Types & Marking Scheme (All 3 Types)

GATE Physics has three question types with different marking rules. The solution PDFs include all three types — understanding the scheme helps you use the solutions strategically.

TypeDescriptionMarksNegativeMSQ/NAT Strategy
MCQMultiple Choice — 1 correct of 41M or 2M−1/3 or −2/3Be selective. Attempt when 70%+ confident. Wrong 2M MCQ costs 2.67 marks (2M lost + 0.67M penalty).
MSQMultiple Select — 1 or more correct2M eachNo negative ✓Always attempt all MSQ. No partial credit — need all correct options. Use solutions to learn systematic option elimination.
NATNumerical Answer Type — type the number1M or 2MNo negative ✓Always attempt all NAT. Speed + calculation precision required. Solutions show fastest computational approaches.
GAGeneral Aptitude — Verbal + Numerical1M or 2M−1/3 or −2/315 marks. Negative marking applies. Study GA solutions separately — fastest approaches to GA questions often differ from physics reasoning.
