Modern Physics and Quantum Mechanics for CSIR NET, IIT JAM and GATE

Quantum Mechanics is the single most important and deeply tested topic in CSIR NET Physical Sciences. It consistently dominates Part C, where 5-8 questions at the highest difficulty level test Dirac notation, perturbation theory, angular momentum, and identical particles. In IIT JAM Physics, Modern Physics and Quantum Mechanics together contribute 20-25% of total marks, covering wave-particle duality, Bohr model, Schrodinger equation, and 1D problems. For GATE Physics and JEST/TIFR, QM is the deepest and most differentiating topic — mastering it is the clearest path to a top rank.

Pravegaa Education’s free Quantum Mechanics PDFs are organized in 9 logical units that build progressively from the mathematical foundations (Hilbert space, Dirac notation) through the full QM syllabus up to perturbation theory and identical particles. Every PDF is written for Griffiths-level conceptual depth calibrated to what actually appears in competitive exam papers.

High-Priority Units for CSIR NET

  • Unit 7 — Perturbation Theory: Non-degenerate and degenerate PT, fine structure, Zeeman and Stark effects appear in almost every CSIR NET Part C paper.
  • Unit 5 — Angular Momentum and Spin: Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, addition of angular momenta, and spin-1/2 systems are tested at advanced levels.
  • Unit 1 — Tools of QM: Dirac notation, operator algebra, and commutator problems are standard CSIR NET questions.
  • Unit 8 — Identical Particles: Bosons, fermions, and Slater determinant problems appear in CSIR NET Part C.

High-Priority Units for IIT JAM Physics

  • Unit 9 — Modern Physics: Photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, de Broglie, and Bohr model problems appear in every IIT JAM paper.
  • Unit 4 — 1D Problems: Particle in a box, harmonic oscillator, and tunneling are high-frequency IIT JAM topics.
  • Unit 3 — Schrodinger Equation: Wave function normalization, expectation values, and stationary states are core IIT JAM QM topics.
  • Unit 6 — Hydrogen Atom: Energy levels, quantum numbers, and orbital probabilities are tested in IIT JAM.
